SES Holdings shows off new battery technology for electric vehicles

When it comes to EVs, every automotive manufacturer wants to build one with the longest driving range. The decision tree to buy electric vehicles for shopper often flows into a mixture of costs and how far it will push per fee. SES Holdings, startup battery manufacturer with a significant investment from GM, has shown new battery technology that can provide electric vehicles in the future of a much longer driving range.

Ses based in Singapore, and last week it showed off lithium-metal battery cells with more than 100 amp-hours of charge. In comparison, modern modern lithium-ion batteries have between 50 and 120 amp-hours. Significant research is being included in alternative technology for batteries with encouragement throughout the world to get drivers into electric vehicles to reduce pollution. As GM found with chevy bolts, the problem with modern lithium-ion batteries is that they can have short circuits and burn.

New battery technology uses lithium metal anodas that can make batteries lighter while becoming more energy crowded. Less weight and higher energy density means a longer driving range per cost for vehicles that use the battery. SES battery technology is seen as a kind of bridge between current lithium-ion batteries and solid-state batteries. A solid-state battery is a type of battery that uses solid material than liquid electrolytes. The problem with liquid electrolytes is they are flammable.

While there are companies out there that work on solid-state lithium-metal batteries, SCS batteries are hybrids that use liquid in the cathode with a dry layer on the lithium-metal anode to help reduce the risk of fire. SCS will send battery cells to GM, Hyundai, and other automotive manufacturers for testing at the end of the year.

The company also built a factory in Shanghai, China, which must be completed in 2023 with the capacity to produce tens of thousands of cell batteries. SES cell batteries show off with 107 hours reportedly increasing technology indicated by rivals. One of the biggest investors in SES is GM, and he knows from the experience that traditional lithium-ion batteries can burn if the manufacturing process is not perfect.

At present, GM is involved in the massive memories of each chevy bolt built, and production has been stopped. GM said that production would not continue until the battery withdrawal was completed and the owner of Bolt EVS had received a replacement battery package. In addition, GM previously warned vehicle owners by parking their cars in the structure or near other properties because of the risk of fire.

At least a dozen fire batteries are recorded because of the short battery circuit. GM and battery manufacture LG traces the cause of short circuits to robots that are wrong limitations on the assembly line. The robot places the battery component to adjacent, allows short circuits to cause excess heat towards fire. So far, the cost of remember is estimated to be around $ 2 billion, and LG is changing GM for a fee. GM and LG continue to work together.
